Communities regenerate not from the outside in but the inside out. Wherever we work, rather than import a set of solutions, we begin with a process of discovery. Story of Place® is the approach we use to understand a community. It’s a systemic and participatory process that identifies and honors the unique nature of a place and the people who live there—and a powerful experience that renews a community’s spirit. Story of Place is a “regenerative approach to sustainable community development that grows a community’s capacity to discover, share, and live out a story that’s uniquely its own.” Join the Institute for the Built Environment, Alliance for Sustainable Colorado, and the Regenesis Group to explore The Story of Place.

Ben Haggard will talk about regenerative development as a practice that orients to the unique potential of a place as a starting point. Through his work at Regenesis Group, Haggard has helped to pioneer the Story of Place process,
which leverages research into a place’s historic and present-day patterns of ecology and culture to inform planning and development. Story of Place helps communities develop an understanding of how they are distinctive, what uniquely “works” and “doesn’t work” there, and what larger value they can contribute to the world. These events will be followed by an in- depth Story of Place workshop in Fort Collins during the autumn of 2017.

Ben Haggard is a founding principal at Regenesis Group, where he consults on regenerative development projects across North and South America and acts as a lead faculty member in the delivery of educational programs to a growing network of regenerative practitioners worldwide. Ben will be co-leading a course on the Story of Place® process, pioneered by Regenesis that focuses on Fort Collins, Colorado in 2017. He is also a co-author of the book Regenerative Development and Design: A Framework for Evolving Sustainability, which was published by John Wiley & Sons in 2016.
